Reporting delivery and review

Management dashboards and the meaning behind the numbers

Leadership needed reports it could use in management discussions. Building the views also exposed decisions about what fees, WIP and debtor figures should mean.

Reporting delivered

Partner and quarterly review dashboards were delivered for review. Calculation and display rules remained part of the review.

The dashboards were delivered for review. Metric definitions, source-data coverage and final sign-off still required attention.

Build around the management conversation

Following a practice-system change, the firm needed individual and leadership reporting. NewLaw’s reporting work included a partner dashboard and a quarterly review view.

The reports put the figures into a form the client could examine. The review then needed to settle how fees, work in progress and debtors should be calculated and displayed.

A dashboard needs agreed definitions

The quarterly dashboard was published for review, with questions about the calculations taken back to the client. Source-data access also formed part of the reporting work.

The practical lesson

Agree what a number means before using it to assess performance. A report is useful only when its readers understand what it includes.
